Zelensky urges Europe to use frozen Russian assets for Ukraine defense

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday called on European leaders to utilize frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s military, saying, “The aggressor must pay,” during talks in the Netherlands.

Zelenskyy met Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof to discuss military assistance, accountability mechanisms, and joint defense production. He thanked the Netherlands for its continued support, including a €700 million ($760 million) defense package and backing for the Priotrized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which enables Kyiv to acquire US-made weapons, including air defense missiles not available in Europe.

The two countries are also exploring joint defense production, particularly modern drones, with Zelenskyy emphasizing that “every step of support right now carries particular significance.”

On the sidelines of a diplomatic conference in The Hague, Zelenskyy met with Schoof, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and Council of Europe Secretary-General Alain Berset to discuss establishing an International Claims Commission for Ukraine. The commission would address claims for damage and losses caused by Russia’s actions, underscoring that “justice is just as important as peace.”

Zelenskyy also urged European leaders to make a decisive move regarding frozen Russian assets, most of which are held in Europe, arguing that the funds should be fully used to defend against Russia’s aggression.

Earlier, Zelenskyy met with Sandu to thank Moldova for its support and discuss cooperation, post-war reconstruction, and shared security concerns, stressing that Ukraine and Moldova’s EU membership paths should progress “simultaneously and closely coordinated.”
